Getting Started

Getting Started

  1. Where to Learn: At first you are afraid because you don't know what to do. If you want to "play" before you actually do anything go to http://www.editme.com/demo  and play in the sandbox. Follow the instructions, creating pages, editing content, etc. Don't worry, they refresh that sight every few hours so anything you do will be gone. For more help go to http://help.editme.com .
  2.  Using the Tools: One of the first things you will notice is that you don't need much more skill than you need to operate a word processor. All you are really doing is adding text. Look on the right side of the page under "hide tools" and you will see a list of things that will help you get started. Most of you will likely only need to go to the right place and hit "edit" under "Page". You will see the content of the page in a box with familiar icons and tools above that will help you start to write some things. You can change fonts, formatting, etc. Eventually you will learn how to post pictures, make tables, etc.
  3. What "tools"? The tools require either Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher, or Mozilla version 1.4 or higher. To check your version of your web browser under "help" on the menu bar of your browser click "About" and it will show your version. If you need an upgrade your browser go to either Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com and look for upgrade links, or to http://mozilla.org and download the highest version of your browser.
  4. Register or Log On: Once you're ready to start building your page or you area of ministry either log in if you've got a username and password or register (where it says "register") and make your own username and password.
  5. Start Typing Use this to post schedules for your ministry, share things about yourself, check out important things you want to look up, etc.

How To

  1. Seeing What's New: Notice on your login settings that you can have the Wiki send you a note everytime something is changed or posted on the Wiki. This is a very handy feature so that you will know by e-mail that something new is up and it will send you a link to the page that has changed. If you don't want an e-mail notification, just go to the "Changes" tool in the right hand column and view links to the changes.
  2. Navigating Quickly: If you want to get to a particular page quickly or create a link to a page on the wiki, notice the web address in your browser. They will all begin with http://lscrc.editme.com which is the home page. Then every other page will have another name. The name of this page is http://lscrc.editme.com/gettingstarted . You can save bookmarks in your browser to special pages you use regularly and go to them directly.
  3. Create a Hyperlink: The World Wide Web is all about creating hyperlinks. The main help section dealing with this is http://help.editme.com/InsertingLinks . Hyperlinks are the words you can click on to take you to a different page. It is easy to create a hyperlink. Select the "Edit" option under the "Page" tools. In the second row of icons on your editing window, 2/3rds of the way to the right you will see what looks like some chain links. Click on that. This will pull up a box asking you to insert an "URL". An "URL" is simply the name of a page you wish to link to. All internet "URL"s begin with "http://" followed by the web address of that page. Before you can type in the URL you want you will need to know the page name. To find that out either go to the page and look in the Address line of your browser, or place your mouse over a hyperlink to that page (without clicking) and look at the bottom of your browser to see the page name. Once you know the page name type in "http://lscrc.editme.com/[the pagename you want to point to] and hit "OK" and you've created a hyperlink!
  4. Post Pictures: The main help description for this is at http://help.editme.com/InsertingImages. I want to make some additional comments as well. Before you insert an image please make sure that you have edited and resized the image first. Only post JPEG or GIF images and resize them to the pixel dimension you will want on your page. You can resize images once you insert them, but if your image is from your digital camera it will be megapixels huge and the uploading and downloading of that file will be enormous. It will also "cost" us in terms of server space and bandwidth traffic. Resizing the picture in your browser window does not change the size of the file, just the size that is viewed. Most image editing software will allow you to resize the image, then check it in your file manager like Windows Explorer (if you use windows). If you have any doubts about the size you can always send it to me and I will resize it for you and attach it to the page you want to place it on.
  5. Creating a table: Check out my http://lscrc.editme.com/peoplescheduleblank page for a template for a basic table. Note the comment on insuring the blank table appears correctly. Otherwise use the "table" icon in your tool section to create a table.
  6. Create a new page: You may want to add a new page on the site as personal space, or for a ministry, or just to organize things better. Here is the link to the help section on this: http://help.editme.com/CreatingNewPages . Just a note that page names cannot have spaces or punctuation and they cannot duplicate a page already made so take some care in naming and then write it down so that you can remember to link to it from another page so everyone can find it.
  7. Creating a calendar: Go here to find a blank calendar template that you can use to place calendars on the website.
