Service Ministry Teams: This is the structure by which we serve the community and the church
Service Ministry Teams
There are a variety of service ministries that Living Stones depends on for the regular operation of the church. Over the past few years these tasks have been assigned via lists that have more or less trundled along with varying degrees of effectiveness and oversight. We are also impacted by the need to more formally vet volunteers who work with children because of the abuse prevention policy. We are at a point for a variety of reasons to overhaul this system and exchange it for one that both works better and pursues the ministry values of our congregation.
Values: 1. Service is a joy and an expectation of the life of Christian discipleship. We want all those who are formal members and/or those who call this place their church home to be given an opportunity for service. 2. We want to distribute the work of the church among its membership. It is unhealthy to expect a few people to do a majority of the work while many have fewer opportunities to serve. 3. We want a system that serves our members and guests with excellence, one where people who are volunteering for things know when they are expected to serve so that they can do so willingly and well. We also want those who serve to have input in how their area of service works.
To pursue this we should establish “Service Ministry Teams” that will be responsible for the variety of service ministries in the church. 1. Each members or regular attender will be expected to serve on a Service Ministry Team. 2. Others who have important responsibilities within the church such as office bearing will be exempt from service on one of these teams if they so chose. 3. We also want each Service Ministry Team to have a team leader who will be responsible for: a. Communicating with the members of the team, b. Helping the team meet when needed and work together well. c. To facilitate scheduling for the team. Instead of the random list we currently have perhaps teams might have a “week of the month” schedule d. Keeping the bulletin secretary up to date on the lists of people serving in different varieties. e. Making sure all members of their team are in compliance with the abuse prevention policy when their team is involved in children’s ministry. 4. Every Service Ministry Team leader will have a council contact person who will make monthly contact.
Where to start? 1. Establish a list of our “Service Ministry Teams” 2. Select Council Contact people 3. Council Contact people recruit a Team Leader 4. Work together with that team leader to give some shape, goals, expectations, format for the team. How often to meet? Guidelines for their service? Scheduling? Etc. 5. Council Contact person and the Team Leader recruit team members. 6. Report the new schedule to the bulletin secretary
